Your account policies

The following information can help you manage your e-mail account.

Storage limits
  • Your Hotmail account can have up to 1 gigabyte (GB) of storage space.
  • Your Hotmail account can have up to 2 gigabytes (GB) of storage space.
  • Incoming messages that will put your account over your limit are returned to the sender. If your account size reaches your limit, you cannot send or receive messages. Hotmail may delete messages to bring your account under the limit. After these messages are deleted, they cannot be recovered.
  • Messages in your Junk E-Mail folder are automatically deleted after seven days.
Account activity
  • Your account becomes inactive if you do not sign in for 30 days, or within the first 10 days after signing up for an account. After an account becomes inactive, all messages, folders, and contacts are deleted, but the account name is still reserved.
  • If the account stays inactive for an additional 90 days, it is permanently deleted.
  • Messages in the Sent Messages folder that are more than 30 days old are deleted.
  • Your account remains active as long as your subscription is active.
Sending messages
  • You can send a maximum of 250 messages per day.
  • You can send a message to a maximum of 50 e-mail addresses at the same time. These addresses can be distributed among the To, Cc, and Bcc lines, or they can all be on one line.
  • You can send a message to a maximum of 100 e-mail addresses at the same time. These addresses can be distributed among the To, Cc, and Bcc lines, or they can all be on one line.
  • Depending on your subscription level, you can send messages up to 20 MB each, including attachments.
  • You can send messages up to 10 MB each, including attachments.
Filtering and security
  • If a file contains a virus, it can't be attached to a message.
  • If a file contains a virus that TrendMicro can't fix, you can't open or send the file.
  • You can create up to 15 custom filters to help you organize incoming messages.
  • You can create up to 50 custom filters to help you organize incoming messages.
  • Your Block Sender List and Safe List can contain a maximum of 500 entries each.
POP e-mail

You can access messages in your POP e-mail account from Hotmail.

  • To see how much storage space your account is using, click the Today tab, and check the storage meter.
  • While Hotmail is currently increasing storage space for all of our users, it will take some time to upgrade everyone.
