I can't sign in because of a problem with my credentials, a firewall, or the security settings

You may receive one or more of the following error messages:

  • The service is temporarily unavailable.
  • We were unable to sign you in, possibly because of a problem with your Internet connection.
  • Your firewall may be blocking MSN Messenger.
  • Failed to connect to the service. This could be due to improper proxy or firewall settings.
  • Your proxy appears to be offline, or your proxy settings are invalid.
  • Your gateway appears to be offline.
 Ensure that firewall settings aren't blocking MSN Messenger
 Clear MSN Messenger proxy settings
 Adjust the Microsoft Internet Explorer proxy settings
 Check your Internet connection settings
 Adjust your security settings
 Verify the date and time settings are correct
 Make sure that you are using the correct user name and password to sign in
 Disable any antispyware programs that are running
 Update the files that are required for authentication

If you still can't sign in to MSN Messenger, the .NET Messenger service may be temporarily unavailable. Wait a few minutes, and then try to sign in again. Or, Microsoft .NET Messenger Service Status to find out the status of the server.
